ARLINGTON, VA – MAY 20, 2020 ” Value Technology Foundation, an American 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides educational resources about emerging technologies, today released a landmark report detailing how the Department of Defense can utilize distributed ledger technology to fight and mitigate cyber warfare threats and otherwise fortify national security. Authored in part by leading technology giants including Accenture, Amazon, Deloitte, CGI Federal, and IBM, with leading blockchain firms ConsenSys, SIMBA Chain, and Colvin Run Networks Inc., “Potential Uses of Blockchain By The U.S. Department of Defense” provides a new perspective on how the DoD can strengthen the military’s cybersecurity, reduce individual points of failure during emergency decision making, increase the efficiency of defense logistics and supply chain operations, and provide unprecedented transparency in the procurement process.

The Value Technology Foundation’s report demonstrates how multi-factor authentication from a blockchain system can provide stronger cybersecurity and how smart contracts could be programmed to provide secure interspace communications for the U.S. Space Force. Additionally, the report details how the U.S. Navy could utilize 3-D Printers on an Aircraft Carrier to generate replacement parts for fighter jets with specifications authenticated by blockchain technology. Moreover, the report describes specific examples of supply chain benefits from blockchain utilization, including how blockchain could make possible real-time audits of the U.S. Army’s procurement process. With leadership from Congressman Darren Soto (D-FL) and his efforts to successfully add an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2020, the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering will conduct a briefing to both the House and Senate Armed Services Committees on the potential use of blockchain technologies for defense purposes.
