NAVAIR Launches Blockchain Research with SIMBA Chain

The US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) is exploring the potential of blockchain technology in tracking parts for it’s aircraft.

NAVAIR provides material support for aircraft and airborne weapons systems for the navy. They announced in a recent press release that it is investigating whether blockchain could trace part life-cycles in a more efficient and cost-effective way than their current methods.

“Knowing the origin and history of flight-critical aircraft parts is a resource-consuming process that drives up the cost to operate military aircraft,”

The existing system tracks parts using a paper-based process and then manually records them on a database. To bring their system into the modern era, the naval command has started researching switching Naval Aviation Enterprise processes to a permissioned blockchain.

A team at NAVAIR’s Fleet Readiness Center Southwest has partnered with SIMBA Chain. The partners hope to develop a quick and secure conceptual framework for a blockchain supply chain system.
