Measuring Manufacturing Productivity

Fidus is a full-service controls engineering firm with a diverse set of expertise from heavy manufacturing to eCommerce. Fidus’ purpose is to assist our customers in solving problems via expert automation design all the way through execution and service.

Measuring OEE has become a manufacturing best practice and has variations that have leaked over into other sectors such as logistics and ecommerce.

Simply put OEE identifies the percentage of manufacturing time that is truly productive. An OEE score of 100% indicates you are manufacturing only good parts, as fast as possible, with no stop time. In the lingo of OEE that means 100% quality (only good parts), 100% performance (as fast as possible), and 100% availability (no Stop Time).

Measuring OEE has become a manufacturing best practice and has variations that have leaked over into other sectors such as logistics and ecommerce. By utilizing the OEE model and measuring the underlying losses, a company can gain important insights on how to systematically improve their automated operations. OEE is the single most significant metric for identifying losses, bench-marking progress, and improving the productivity of automation equipment (i.e., eliminating waste).

Use Case Challenge

Challenge

OEE is the way most companies produce production key performance indicators (KPIs). However, OEE data is often not as reliable as it should be because many of the material handling equipment (MHE) systems allow for manual input/overrides of machine data. i.e. up-time/downtime, reliability, quality, defects, throughput etc. consequently, such manual intervention skews KPIs, making it difficult, or even impossible, to improve efficiency and performance. Moreover, the use of open source analog controls systems that can be easily manipulated is orthodox within the space.

Use Case Solution

Solution

By connecting key industrial equipment data to the Blockchain, we will provide a non-changeable data layer for the collection of OEEs, which will help solve these issues and enable the necessary safeguards to protect the integrity of such vital business operational data. Automation is rapidly expanding, and consequently, MHE system data is being relied on more and more everyday by companies in order to plan, project results, and make critical decisions. Combining the expertise of blockchain engineering to overlay industrial hardware communications is the perfect answer to assuring that this vital data is secure, leading to more accurate and trustworthy KPIs.

To achieve this vision, Fidus Global and SIMBA Chain are combining expertise to connect industrial SCADA systems, warehouse control systems (WCS), human machine interface (HMI’s), programmable logic circuits (PLCs) and computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to Blockchain in order to bring irrefutable trust to the manufacturing life cycle.
